Comments
The correspondence between cpo mRNAs and proteins is not clear. Three proteins are predicted from cDNAs but only one 50kD band is detected with the cpo antibody. The RNA-binding-protein consensus domain in cpo protein is most similar to that of a human brain protein (HuD) and Drosophila elav.
The 64kD cpo protein is predicted from the "61.1" class of cpo cDNA. The cpo antibody was made against a protein fragment that is common to the predicted 64kD and 56kD proteins but it recognizes only a 50kD species on immunoblots of embryonic extracts. The RNA-binding-protein consensus domain in cpo protein is most similar to that of a human brain protein (HuD) and Drosophila elav.
The 51kD cpo protein is predicted from the "17" class of cpo cDNA. In contrast to the other predicted cpo proteins, it lacks the RNA-binding-protein consensus domain.
The 56kD cpo protein is predicted from the "61.2" class of cpo cDNA. The cpo antibody was made against a protein fragment that is common to the predicted 64kD and 56kD proteins but it recognizes only a 50kD species on immunoblots of embryonic extracts. The RNA-binding-protein consensus domain in cpo protein is most similar to that of a human brain protein (HuD) and Drosophila elav.

cpo protein is most abundant in neurons and support cells of the PNS, is less abundant in a number of glia of the PNS and CNS and is present at low levels in the embryonic midgut. cpo protein levels are reduced in a number of unspecified lethal cpo alleles tested. No changes in cpo protein pattern or levels of expression were observed in homozygous viable cpo mutants or in homozygous cpol9 embryos. In da and AS-C- mutants, cpo expression is absent in the PNS except for the chordotonal neurons. Expression in the CNS and midgut is unaffected.
