The 4.0 and 4.5 kb fw transcripts are detected in all developmental stages.
fw transcript is expressed in all imaginal discs. In the eye imaginal disc, expression is strongest in the dorsal and ventral margins. In the wing disc, expression is higher in cells of the prospective dorsal and ventral wing surfaces, ventral pleura and the notum. All cells in the haltere, leg, antennal, labial, clypeo-labral, humeral and genital discs express fw. Lower levels of fw expression are also seen in parts of the digestive system, the proventriculus, the gastric caecae, and parts of the larval brain.
The pattern of fw protein expression closely matches that of fw transcript expression. fw protein accumulates in all imaginal discs, in the pattern seen for fw transcript. Additional strong staining is seen in posterior to the morphogenetic furrow in the eye disc. fw protein is also expressed in parts of the digestive system, the proventriculus, and the gastric caecae, as well as in the larval brain.
