Gene Group (FlyBase)
S9 NON-PEPTIDASE HOMOLOGS -
S9 non-peptidase homologs are similar in amino acid sequence to S9 serine peptidases but lack one or more of the expected catalytic residues. (Adapted from FBrf0239469.)
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Not known. Binds calcium ions.
(UniProt, P33438)
Phenotypic Description (Red Book; Lindsley and Zimm 1992)
Glt: Glutactin
Encodes an acidic sulfated glycoprotein of basement membranes.
Summary (Interactive Fly)

transmembrane - novel serine esterase homolog - functions in glia to ensure a secure blood-brain barrier - located to tricellular junctions and is critical for the formation of tricellular and septate junctions and permeability barrier function

Structure
Protein 3D structure   (Predicted by AlphaFold)   (AlphaFold entry P33438)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Testis-specificity index

The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).

Additional Descriptive Data

In situ hybridization shows that Glt is enriched in border follicle cells relative to follicle cells in stage S9 or S10 egg chambers.

Glt protein is found in basement membranes, especially the invaginated envelope of the embryonic CNS, muscle apodemes and dorsal median cell processes.

          Other Comments

A region of the Nrt extracellular domain is sufficient for cell adhesion, cholinesterase-like domain (from Glt) may functionally replace the Nrt extracellular domain for adhesion properties.

EST SD17528 is chimeric; the 5' portion matches part of AE on the opposite strand to Glt, the 3' portion corresponds to part of RpS8.

In vitro fusion of the homologous extracellular domain of Egfr and Glt to the Nrt cytoplasmic domain can mediate aggregation of cells incubated with a soluble crude fraction containg Nrt ligand activity. The binding site for the Nrt ligand is localised within the extracellular domain. A stretch of 25 amino acids forms an alpha-helix located close to the pseudocatalytic site and is crucial for the adhesive function.

Glt encodes an acidic sulphated glycoprotein of basement membranes.

Encodes an acidic sulfated glycoprotein of basement membranes.
