knk is an apical GPI-linked protein that acts at the plasma membrane. knk is required for chitin filament assembly in the tracheal lumen and cuticle.
Mutation in knk alters tracheal tube size in embryos without affecting other aspects of tracheal development including primary branch budding and outgrowth or branch fusion.
Zygotically active locus involved in the terminal developmental program in the embryo.
knk mutants display a defective head skeleton, narrow denticle bands and the embryo is rarely inverted in the egg case.
