Annotation CG1540 split into CG31051 and CG33103 (Ppn) in release 3 of the genome annotation.
Relationship of "Mdp-1" with "Ppn" is unclear; mAb 5H7 recognises "Mdp-1" protein in embryo protein extracts, and "Ppn" in Kc cell protein extracts. However biochemical analysis of the two proteins reveals a number of significant differences between the two molecules. "Ppn" and "Mdp-1" may therefore represent two different genes, or "Mdp-1" protein may be the naturally occurring form of "Ppn", which is secreted by Kc cells in culture.

The Ppn gene product influences cell rearrangements and may modulate metalloproteinases during organogenesis.
Ppn protein, a sulfated glycoprotein, has been isolated from the culture media of Drosophila Kc cells, and its expression in embryos and larvae has been studied.
