sl transcripts are observed at all four stages of development on northern blots. By in situ hybridization, a strong signal is observed all around the surface of the embryo at cellularization. Subsequently, the signal decreases but is detectable throughout embryogenesis. Later, high levels of expression are seen in the invaginated anterior and posterior midgut primordia.
