Component of the small ribosomal subunit. Mature ribosomes consist of a small (40S) and a large (60S) subunit. The 40S subunit contains about 33 different proteins and 1 molecule of RNA (18S). The 60S subunit contains about 49 different proteins and 3 molecules of RNA (28S, 5.8S and 5S). Interacts with oho23B/rpS21.

sta is expressed maternally and throughout development. It is ubiquitously expressed in embryos.
sta was found to be equally distributed among ribosomal particles, including polysomes, monomeric 80S ribosomes, and native ribosomal subunits.

Please Note FlyBase no longer curates genomic clone accessions so this list may not be complete
Please Note This section lists cDNAs and ESTs that fall within the genomic extent of the gene model, which may include cDNAs and ESTs of genes within introns, or of overlapping genes. Please see GBrowse for alignment of the cDNAs and ESTs to the gene model.
For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.

"l(1)G0129" may affect "sta".
Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) down-regulates a distinct splice isoform(s) of this gene.
RNAi screen using dsRNA made from templates generated with primers directed against this gene results in aberrantly short, monopolar spindles when assayed in S2 cells. This phenotype can be observed when the screen is performed with or without Cdc27 dsRNA.
Not a Minute gene.
Deletions removing sta but no other cytoplasmic ribosomal protein-encoding genes do not show Minute phenotypes.
Molecularly-defined mutations in sta do not result in Minute phenotypes.
sta gene product is required during oogenesis and imaginal development.
The sta locus is subject to T(1;2)dorvar7 position effect variegation.
