Vm26Aa is first detected in stage S8-S9 egg chambers, and persists until stage S11. Expression is follicle cell-specific.

Vm26Aa is expressed during stages S8 to S11 of oogenesis. Levels decline precipitously by stage S12. Vm26Aa localizes to the follicle cells of stage S8, S9 and S10 egg chambers.

In a developmental Northern blot, Vm26Aa was detected in stages S8 through S10 of oogenesis.

        Polyclonal antibodies have been used to localise Vm26Aa, Vm26Ab, Cp18 and Cp36 in the assembly and mature eggshell.

        A developmental control element capable of promoting the basic vitelline membrane expression pattern maps within a 176bp section of the 5' flanking region, but additional elements are required to modify the level and pattern of expression.

        Vm26Aa is sequenced and the sequence compared with that of Vm34Ca, which has a very similar expression pattern, to identify common sequence elements in upstream regions known to be important for the control of gene expression.

        The Vm26Aa, Vm26Ab, Vm32E, Vm34Ca genes make up a multigene family that includes at least these four members.

        The Vm26Aa, Vm26Ab, Vm32E, Vm34Ca genes are responsible for encoding the major proteins of the first layer of the Drosophila eggshell, the vitelline membrane.

        Mutations at the Vm26Aa locus cause defects in midoogenesis.

        Vm26Aa, Vm26Ab, Vm32E, Vm34Ca encode translation products with the high proline and alanine content characteristic of vitelline membrane proteins.

        In situ hybridisation of recombinant DNA probes to polytene chromosomes of D.melanogaster and D.virilis is performed to study homologies between the chromosomal Muller elements of the two species.
