Summaries
Gene Snapshot
Glycogen phosphorylase (Glyp) encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorolytic cleavage of glycogen to produce glucose 1-phosphate and thus plays an essential role in glycogen catabolism (glycogenolysis). [Date last reviewed: 2024-09-19]
Pathway (FlyBase)
Insulin-like Receptor Signaling Pathway Core Components -
The Insulin-like Receptor (IR) signaling pathway in Drosophila is initiated by the binding of an insulin-like peptides to the Insulin-like receptor (InR). (Adapted from FBrf0232297, FBrf0230017 and FBrf0229989.)
GLYCOGEN CATABOLISM -
Glycogen is a highly branched polymer composed of chains of D-glucose linked linearly by α-1,4-glucosidic bonds and joined together by α-1,6-glucosidic bonds between branch points. It is stored in cytosolic granules and serves as an energy source when food supplies are low. Glycogen catabolism involves the cleavage of α-1,4-glucosidic bonds by glycogen phosphorylase Glyp from the non-reducing ends of the linear chain releasing glucose 1-phosphate. The final four glycosyl residues of each branch are removed in two steps by glycogen debranching enzyme Agl. Alternatively, glycogen can be degraded in the lysosomes via an autophagic process known as glycophagy. In D. melanogaster adults, glycogen is primarily catabolized in the fat body and flight muscles to produce glucose and trehalose. (Adapted from FBrf0238357, FBrf0223427 and PMID:22248338.)
Gene Group (FlyBase)
UNCLASSIFIED HEXOSYLTRANSFERASES -
This group comprises hexosyltransferases that do not classify under other groups in FlyBase.
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Phosphorylase is an important allosteric enzyme in carbohydrate metabolism. Enzymes from different sources differ in their regulatory mechanisms and in their natural substrates. However, all known phosphorylases share catalytic and structural properties (By similarity). Required for glycogen breakdown in skeletal muscle.

Structure
Protein 3D structure   (Predicted by AlphaFold)   (AlphaFold entry Q9XTL9)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

The effects of a high sucrose diet on live weight, total protein, stored lipid and glycogen and crude activities of 12 enzymes involved in energy metabolism are quantified. The activities of many enzymes are reduced by the sucrose treatment.

GlyP protein has been purified and characterised.
