cdi transcripts are detected at all stages of embryogenesis as well as in larvae, pupae, and adults on northern blots. Only the shortest isoform is observed in early embryos and may be maternally transmitted. In situ hybridization shows nervous system expression specifically in the midline in both neurons and glia. Expression is also observed in the foregut, hindgut, and proventriculus.
cdi protein is found throughout the eye-antennal disc. The localization is cytoplasmic and more prominent in the apical domains of the eye disc epithelium.
