LACHESIN SUBFAMILY OF WIRINS -
Wirins are members of a widely distributed family of two- and three-Ig domain molecules that mediate axonal guidance, synapse targeting, and other neuronal wiring-related functions. The Lachesin subfamily is a relatively small Wirin subfamily that expanded specifically in lophotrochozoans, but comprises a single member in D. melanogaster. (Adapted from FBrf0245249.)

Required for normal tracheal development and maintenance of the trans-epithelial diffusion barrier. Functions as a homophilic cell-adhesion molecule. May play a role in early neuronal differentiation and axon outgrowth.

      Embryos injected with dsRNA made from templates generated with primers directed against this gene show late epithelial embryonic defect - these embryos die following profound defects in the development of the tracheal epithelial tubes.

      Lac behaves as a homophilic cell adhesion molecule required to provide epithelial integrity to the tracheal tubes and to control tubular epithelium length.
