Function
GO Summary Ribbons
Protein Family (UniProt)
Belongs to the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter (SNF) (TC 2.A.22) family. (P51905)
Summaries
Gene Group (FlyBase)
SLC6 FAMILY OF SODIUM/CHLORIDE-DEPENDENT NEUROTRANSMITTER TRANSPORTERS -
Solute carrier family 6 (SLC6) members are Na+/Cl--dependent transporters of extracellular neurotransmitters, amino acids and osmolytes across the plasma membrane into the cytosol. (Adapted from FBrf0193583).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Terminates the action of serotonin by its high affinity sodium-dependent reuptake into presynaptic terminals.
(UniProt, P51905)

Comment: Thorax and abdomen assayed together. Bands of 1.4 and 2.2kb detected.

Additional Descriptive Data

SerT-mRNA expression resembles the distribution pattern of serotonin in the larval and adult CNS.

Embryonic expression of SerT mRNA in the ventral nerve cord is observed in two serotonergic neurons per hemisegment.

SerT transcripts are detected in RNA from adult heads but not in RNA from embryos or adult bodies.

SerT transcripts are detected in a restricted number of cell bodies in the ventral ganglion and the brain in late embryos. The cell bodies are just ventral to the neuropil and are generally clustered. Each suboesophageal hemiganglion contains three positive cell bodies. Each thoracic and abdominal hemiganglion contains two stained cell bodies, except A8, which contains a single stained cell body.

Drosophila Genomics Resource Center cDNA clones

For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.

S2 cells treated with dsRNA generated against this gene show reduced phagocytosis of Candida albicans compared to untreated cells.

Based on an alignment of the nucleotide sequence of the cDNA clone from FBrf0072947 and FBrf0068457 the two cDNA's represent the same gene.

The nucleotide sequence from FBrf0072947 and FBrf0068457, encoding a functional fly Serotonin like transporter, are identical.

SerT possesses a number of functional properties of the Na+/Cl- superfamiliy, including a dependence on Na and Cl, a high affinity for 5HT and electrogenicity. SerT is coccaine-sensitive, possessing an unusual pharmacological profile.
