wee expression is ubiquitous, and declines by gastrulation, with strong staining still detected in the pole cells. At stage 7, zygotic expression is detected in the presumptive mesoderm. After germ band retraction,
wee expression is detected in the gut and the CNS. CNS expression continues to be detected in late embryos and in first larval instar.

cdc2 activity and times mitotic entry during the cortical nuclear cycles of syncytial blastoderm embryos.
RNAi screen using dsRNA made from templates generated with primers directed against this gene causes a phenotype when assayed in S2R+ cells: cell morphology is aberrant, indicative of a failure in cell cycle/mitosis progression. This phenotype is not seen in Kc167 cells.
