Using Drosophila, periodical cicades and hominid primates, it is demonstrated that the molecular clock based on 12S rRNA genes ticks at significantly different relative rates depending on which taxa and which region of the gene are examined.
The internal transcribed spacer regions of the bb locus of a number of Drosophila species have been analysed and compared.
The nucleotide sequence of bb from twelve species of the obscura group reveals the presence of a secondary structure in the A+T-rich region that may explain the generation of minor insertions/deletions found in this region that generate length polymorphisms.
