Hr96 transcripts are expressed throughout third instar larval and prepupal development. A distinct increase in levels is seen at 106hr after egg laying suggesting that they may be ecdysone-inducible. 2.8kb Hr96 transcripts were shown to be ecdysone inducible in cultured larval organs.
Hr96 is most abundantly expressed in the fat body, salivary glands, gastic caeca of the midgut, and Malpighian tubules and more weakly in the proventriculus and anterior region of the midgut in late third instar larvae. No staining is detected in imaginal discs, muscle, epidermis, brain, or trachea.
