Gene Snapshot
dissatisfaction (dsf) encodes a nuclear receptor that regulates hemocyte proliferation, courtship behavior and neural differentiation. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-07]
Gene Group (FlyBase)
NUCLEAR RECEPTOR (LIGAND-DEPENDENT) TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS -
Nuclear receptors (NR) are C4 zinc finger ligand-dependent DNA-binding transcription factors. Members of the NR superfamily are defined by the presence of a highly conserved DNA-binding domain and a less conserved C-terminal ligand-binding domain. (Adapted from FBrf0184203).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Orphan receptor that binds DNA as a monomer to hormone response elements (HRE) containing an extended core motif half-site sequence 5'-AAGTCA-3' (PubMed:11977984). Acts as a transcriptional repressor (PubMed:11977984). In both females and males, functions downstream of tra2 to regulate the development and function of certain sex-specific abdominal neurons, and likely regulates the development and/or function of the nervous system that controls courtship behaviors involved in the recognition and response of adults to appropriate sexual partners (PubMed:11977984, PubMed:9023356, PubMed:9883729). In males, promotes abdominal motor neuronal innervation of the ventral muscles of abdominal segment 5 which is required for correct abdominal curling during copulation (PubMed:9023356, PubMed:9883729). In females, also promotes abdominal motor neuronal innervation but on the uterine muscles which is required for egg laying (PubMed:9023356, PubMed:9883729).
(UniProt, Q9VML1)

Structure
Protein 3D structure   (Predicted by AlphaFold)   (AlphaFold entry Q9VML1)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Testis-specificity index

The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).

Additional Descriptive Data

dsf expression is detected at all stages on northern blots. In situ hybridization to cryostat sections from larvae, pupae, and pharate adults shows expression restricted to a small number of neurons in the brain. In larvae, three labelled groups of cells are found in the anterior region of the brain. Weak expression was also observed in the salivary gland. In pupae, expression is detected in several small groups of cells in the anterior regions of the protocerebrum. In pharate adults, only a few labelled cells are found. About 20 large neurons are located close to the antennal lobe and lateral protocerebral neuropil. A cluster of about 10 cells is found just below the chemosensory region of the antennal lobe and near the mechanosensory region of the antennal lobe and subesophageal neuropils. In some cases a small number of expressing cells are found in the dorsal-most regions of the brain along the midline.

For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.
