biparous, bps
bHLH transcription factor - Neurogenin/NeuroD homolog - a neural differentiation gene, acting later in the hierarchy of gene activation than the proneural genes - functionally interacts with the Wnt-PCP pathway to regulate neuronal extension and guidance.

tap is expressed in two clusters of cells in each segment, one dorsal and one ventral that also express Poxn. In contrast to Poxn, it is expressed only at or near the onset of differentiation. The expression is very transient, lasting less than an hour. While Poxn is expressed in most or all of the progeny of a sensory mother cell, tap is expressed in only one cell of each organ. The expression of tap is dependent on Poxn.
tap transcripts are first observed at stage 10 by in situ hybridization. At that time they are present in 5 cells per segment, one unpaired cell on the midline thought to be the median neuroblast and two pairs lateral to the midline one of which is probably neuroblast 4-1. During germ band extension, there is a large burst of tap expression in the ganglion mother cell (gmc) layer of the ventral nerve cord. An estimated 12-18 cells per hemisegment express tap in the gmc layer. After this, expression is restricted to progressively fe er cells. By stage 14, expression is found in cells at the lateral edge of the CNS. By stage 15, expression is maintained in two large cells per hemisegment. The sites of tap expression do not appear to overlap with elav or repo expression indicating that tap is not expressed in post-mitotic neurons or glia. Some tap-positive cells are synthesizing DNA, suggesting that they are progenitor cells of either neurons or glia.
Based on a series of double labelling experiments, the site of expression of tap protein in the chemosensory lineage was determined to be the anterior v\'es2 neuron.

Please Note This section lists cDNAs and ESTs that fall within the genomic extent of the gene model, which may include cDNAs and ESTs of genes within introns, or of overlapping genes. Please see GBrowse for alignment of the cDNAs and ESTs to the gene model.
For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.

tap is expressed in a small subset of neurons when they undergo differentiation. In the peripheral nervous system, tap is expressed exclusively in one of the neurons that innervates each larval chemosensory organ, possibly controlling the specific properties of that neuron. Expression of tap is regulated by Poxn.
tap is expressed in both neuronal and glial precursors after they have progressed beyond the ectodermal vs neuronal decision but before they differentiate into mature neurons or glia. Unlike other neural bHLH genes, expression persists until very late stages of embryogenesis.
The autosomal "FLP-DFS" technique (using the P{ovoD1-18} P{FRT(whs)} P{hsFLP} chromosomes) has been used to identify the specific maternal effect phenotype for the zygotic lethal mutation. tap gene expression during oogenesis is not critical to embryonic development, but the gene function may be essential for fertilisation and/or completion of meiosis.
'biparous' means producing two offspring, based on its expression in progenitor cells that give rise to two types of cells.
