Eleven putative esterase genes from the region containing the α-esterase cluster are cloned.
Encodes the EST23 isozyme, a subclass I carboxyl esterase whose preferred naphthyl ester substrate in vitro is α naphthyl acetate. The in vivo function of α-Est7 is unknown but the enzyme shows very close biochemical similarity with the E3 enzyme of the Australian sheep blowfly L.cuprina.
