Eyes small and rough. Veins L2, L3, L4, and L5 do not always extend to margin. Overlaps wild type rarely. S +/+ ast has very small eyes with fused facets; veins L2 to L5 incomplete at tip. S ast/+ ast has slightly larger eye than S +/+ ast. S ast/+ + resembles S +/+ +. S +/+ ast and ast/ast partially suppress px and net. Eyes of ast/E(S) rough. RK2.

Shs.8 (FBrf0073598) rescues the embryonic lethality of S104E and S1, and the rough eye phenotype of ast, even in the absence of heat shock. On the basis of this rescue, ast and S merged to same gene. Split again on the basis of new molecular data (FBrf0085372).

ast may function in an Egfr signaling pathway.
Molecular data and phenotypic interactions are consistent with the interpretation that S and ast mutations are lesions within the same gene or within genes that are functionally related.
Mutations in ast cause pleiotropic phenotypes in embryonic patterns and affect several longitudinal veins.
Mutants show a small rough eye phenotype with the longitudinal wing veins failing to meet the wing margin. Interact with alleles of S.
