bl protein is located in puffs and prominent interbands (sites engaged in transcription) on polytene chromosomes.
bl protein is present in early embryos where it undergoes redistribution from cytoplasm to nucleus that coincides with the initation of zygotic transcription in early embryos. During nuclear cycles 10-12, it is present in the cytoplasm and by cycle 14, it is exclusively nuclear. From cycle 14 throughout the rest of embryogenesis and in imaginal discs, the protein is present in all interphase nuclei.
