Gene Snapshot
Open rectifier K[+] channel 1 (Ork1) encodes a member of the two pore open rectifier potassium channel gene family. It contributes to the regulation of membrane resting potential. The primary gating mechanism for the product of Ork1 appears to be based on phosphorylation of multiple serine, threonine and tyrosine residues in the large intracellular C-terminal tail. [Date last reviewed: 2019-09-26]

Protein Family (UniProt)
Belongs to the two pore domain potassium channel (TC 1.A.1.8) family. (Q94526)
Summaries
Gene Group (FlyBase)
TWO-PORE DOMAIN K+ CHANNEL SUBUNITS -
The two-pore domain K+ (K2P) channels possess four transmembrane domains and two pore domains; they assemble as dimers. K2P channels have been implicated in a number of processes such as maintaining resting potential (leak K+ conductance), responding to volatile anesthetics, chemo- and mechanosensation. (Adapted from FBrf0188365 and PMID:11121510).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Background potassium channel. Rectification is dependent on external potassium concentration. Acts as an outwardly rectifying channel but as external potassium levels increase, this is reversed.

Additional Descriptive Data
Ork1 transcript is expressed in the spontaneously contracting myocytes of the larval heart.
A 2.8kb Ork1 transcript is present in adults and is also detected at low levels in embryos and larvae. In situ hybridization reveals that Ork1 transcripts are widespread in adult flies and are particularly abundant in muscle, brain and ovary.
