Maternally contributed Alas transcript is present in embryos through syncytial blastoderm stage. Zygotic Alas transcript is undetectable via in situ until embryonic stage 14, when it begins to be expressed in a set of cells coinciding with oenocyte markers in in the distal part of each abdominal segment; and in two symmetrical groups of cells at the anterior of the embryo that coincide with markers for the Bolwig organ primordium.
