sdk localises to the axons and growth cones, where it is concentrated, of developing photoreceptor cells R1-R6, but not R7-R8 in ommatidial precursor clusters. It is present in glial cells that ensheath the axons of developing R7-R8 cells. It is also present in neurons that will go onto to be columnar neurons in the lamina. In the pupa, it localises to five spots in the optic cartridge that likely represent the contacts between the heels of the photoreceptor growth cones.
