At embryonic stage 11 ball-transcripts are enriched in the nervous system and can be detected in most neuroblasts and a subset of ganglion mother cells. At the end of embryogenesis ball-RNA is restricted to parts of the developing brain and the gonads.
ball-protein is detected ubiquitously in the syncytial cells of the early embryo. At later stages ball-protein is expressed in epidermal cells. It becomes restricted to the developing nervous system by stage 11 when the protein is detected in most neuroblasts and a subset of ganglion mother cells. At embryonic stage 11 labeling ist stronger in cells of the peripheral part of the nervous system. During mitosis ball-protein co-localizes with chromatin.
