AROMATIC PRENYLTRANSFERASES -
Aromatic prenyltransferases catalyze the transfer reactions of prenyl moieties onto aromatic acceptors such as phenols, phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, naphthalenes, phenazines, or indole derivatives. They usually catalyze the formation of C-C, C-O, or C-N bonds between the carbon of the prenyl and carbon or functional groups of the aromatic substrates. Membrane-bound or soluble aromatic prenyltransferases exhibit distinct characteristics, such as structural fold, substrate binding motifs, and metal ion dependency. (Adapted from PMID:26216239.)
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Prenyltransferase that mediates the formation of menaquinone-4 (MK-4), a vitamin K2 isoform, thereby acting as a mitochondrial electron carrier. Mediates the conversion of phylloquinone (PK) into MK-4, probably by cleaving the side chain of phylloquinone (PK) to release 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (menadione; K3) and then prenylating it with geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) to form MK-4. MK-4 acts as a membrane electron carrier downstream of a electron transport chain complex, improving mitochondrial oxygen consumption.

heix is highly expressed in the plasmatocyte/macrophage lineage within the anterior srp-expressing domain of the head mesoderm during embryonic stages 12-17. In third instar larvae, it is detected in crystal cells in the cortical zone of the primary lobe in lymph gland.
