SYNAPTOTAGMINS & SYNAPTOTAGMIN-LIKE PROTEINS -
Synaptotagmins are a family of membrane-trafficking proteins characterized by an N-terminal transmembrane region and tandem cytoplasmic C2 domains which mediate specific interactions. Some of the family can interact with lipids in a Ca2+-dependent manner, leading to Ca2+-regulated release of neurotransmitters and hormones in the nervous and endocrine system. Syt4 is initially expressed in embryonic stage 13 in the CNS, ventral nerve cord, and ventral midline and expression persists into late embryonic stages.

Syt4 transcripts are expressed ubiquitously and specifically in the embryonic central nervous system. They are expressed in most or all neurons.
