RT-PCR analysis indicates that
debcl transcripts are expressed at all stages of development. In situ hybridization reveals that
debcl transcripts are expressed at high levels in early embryos. Expression is also observed in third instar larvae in leg, wing, and eye disc and in the midgut.

debcl protects neurons from neurodegeneration through the regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis.
dsRNA made from templates generated with primers directed against this gene causes a phenotype in S2 cells. The reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and increase in cell death caused by treatment of cells with rotenone or 3-NP is enhanced. Cell death induction by treatment with proteasome inhibitors is likewise enhanced, while cell death induction by tunicamycin is not affected. Additionally,
debcl knockdown significantly increases the percentage of mitochondria showing abnormal morphologies in S2 cells with intact nuclei and enhances the reduction of activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I +III (NADH-cytochrome c oxidoreductase) and complex II +III (succinate-cytochrome c oxidoreductase) in S2 cells treated with rotenone or 3-NP.
