Gene Snapshot
VAMP-associated protein 33kDa (Vap33) encodes a protein that plays a conserved role in synaptic homeostasis. It controls a number of processes which depend on phosphoinositide levels, such as synaptic growth and axonal transport. It binds to the product of Sac1 to maintain normal levels of phosphoinositides and to the product of Dscam1 to affect its localization within axonal projections. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-21]

Additional comments
Symbol of this gene changed from 'Vap-33A' to 'Vap33' as it is now apparent that it encodes the sole VAP protein in D. melanogaster.
FlyBase curator comment: The '33' suffix has been retained to distinguish this gene from the 'vap' gene (FBgn0003969).
FlyBase curator comment: Originally called 'VAP-33-1' in FBrf0127207, but this papers by same group (this one & FBrf0202930) call it 'VAP-33A'. (This nomenclature also matches the related gene named 'VAP-33B'.)
Source for merge of Vap-33-1 BcDNA:GM03307 was a shared cDNA ( date:030728 ).
Source for merge of Vap-33-1 anon-WO03040301.124 was sequence comparison ( date:051113 ).
Other Comments
Hypomorphic and null mutations in Vap-33-1 cause a severe decrease in bouton number and an increase in bouton size.
dsRNA made from templates generated with primers directed against this gene tested in RNAi screen for effects on Kc167 and S2R+ cell morphology.
Vap-33-1 and dlg1 localize asymmetrically at the synapse during bouton budding.
