Gene Group (FlyBase)
TALE HOMEOBOX TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS -
TALE homeobox transcription factors are sequence-specific DNA binding proteins that regulate transcription. These proteins are characterized by an atypical homeodomain that possesses a three amino acid insertion in the first loop. (Adapted from FBrf0232555 and PMID:18797923).

Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Expression Summary Ribbons
Colored tiles in ribbon indicate that the Fly Cell Atlas project found the gene expressed in that cell type. Darker colors mean that more cells of that cell type express the gene:
 low
high
Colorless tiles indicate that there is no scRNAseq data for the gene in that cell type.
Colored tiles in ribbon indicate that expression data (RNA and/or protein) has been curated by FlyBase for that anatomical location. Colorless tiles indicate that there is no curated data for that location.
Colored tiles in the ribbon indicate the average RNA expression level of the gene at the indicated stages:
 low
high
as determined by RNA-seq (RPKM) using whole organism samples modENCODE, Brown et al., 2014. For complete stage-specific expression data, view the modENCODE Development RNA-Seq section under High-Throughput Expression below.

Additional Descriptive Data

Developmental RT PCR analysis using a probe that detects all isoforms of both achi and vis indicate roughly equal expression through all stages of development. In situ analysis of adult testes detect high achi and/or vis expression in the primary spermatocyte stage, persisting into the meiotic divisions. No expression is detect in the apex.

The zaa line is found to be a combination of two alleles visZ3922 and visZ3922.

    Other Comments

achi and vis are essential for developmentally regulated transcription during spermatogenesis.

achi, vis, aly and comr proteins may exist in a complex.

    achi is required during spermatogenesis.

    aly-like meiotic arrest gene.

    Origin and Etymology
    Discoverer
    Etymology

'vismay' is a Hindi word meaning 'surprise'.

"vismay" is Hindi for "surprise" - reflecting the surprise of the investigators upon discovering a tandem duplication in the genome which was the basis of the confusion surrounding the molecular analysis of achi.
