Enzyme Name (EC)
alpha-tubulin N-acetyltransferase (2.3.1.108)
Gene Summary
Specifically acetylates 'Lys-40' in alpha-tubulin on the lumenal side of microtubules (By similarity) (PubMed:36302967). Promotes microtubule destabilization and accelerates microtubule dynamics; this activity may be independent of acetylation activity. Acetylates alpha-tubulin with a slow enzymatic rate, due to a catalytic site that is not optimized for acetyl transfer. Enters the microtubule through each end and diffuses quickly throughout the lumen of microtubules. Acetylates only long/old microtubules because of its slow acetylation rate since it does not have time to act on dynamically unstable microtubules before the enzyme is released (By similarity). Acetylates central spindle microtubules (PubMed:36302967). (UniProt, Q9VSY4)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Symbol changed from 'Tat' to 'Atat' because: (i) 'Atat' is the more common symbol for this gene in the wider field; (ii) 'Tat' is the established symbol for a different gene encoding 'tyrosine aminotransferase' (CG1461 in D. melanogaster), and (iii) 'Atat' better reflects the full name 'α-tubulin acetylase'.
