The gene is named "stepping stone" based both on its physical interaction with the 'step' protein and on the loss of function phenotype: mutant embryos show membrane cytoskeletal expansion from the base of the pseudocleavage and cellularization furrows, resulting in the nuclei appearing like stepping stones widely separated across a pond.
