Protein Family (UniProt)
Belongs to the class V-like SAM-binding methyltransferase superfamily. Histone-lysine methyltransferase family. SET2 subfamily. (Q8MT36)
Summaries
Gene Group (FlyBase)
SET DOMAIN LYSINE METHYLTRANSFERASES -
SET domain lysine methyltransferases (KMTs) catalyze the addition of methyl groups to lysine residues. SET domain KMTs possess a domain that was original characterized in the D.mel KMTs Su(var)3-9, E(z) and trx. (Adapted from FBrf0216343).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Probable histone methyltransferase. Histone methylation gives specific tags for epigenetic transcriptional activation or repression (By similarity).

Additional comments

Renamed from 'Mes-4' to 'NSD' because: i) the 'Mes-4' symbol was too easily confused with the unrelated gene 'Mes4' (FBgn0034726); ii) the original 'Mes-4' symbol was assigned based only on an ADRC abstract (FBrf0145882); iii) FBrf0201596 and FBrf0178951 say that this gene shows homology to human and mouse NSD1, WHSC1 (aka NSD2) and WHSC1-L (NSD3); iv) FBrf0225639 uses 'NSD' as a synonym of 'Mes-4'.

Other Comments

Gene expression is increased in response to the presence of two copies of Scer\GAL4hs.PB.

One of 42 Drosophila genes identified as being most likely to reveal molecular and cellular mechanisms of nervous system development or plasticity relevant to human Mental Retardation disorders.
