Gene Group (FlyBase)
ABCD ATP-BINDING CASSETTE TRANSPORTER SUBFAMILY -
The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family are primary active transporters that use ATP hydrolysis to drive the transport of substrates across the membrane. The ABCD subfamily are half transporters that must dimerize to form a functional transporter. In humans, ABCDs are involved in the import of long and branch chain acyl-CoA molecules into the peroxisome. (Adapted from FBrf0224053).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Plays a role in the transport of free very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) as well as their CoA-esters across the peroxisomal membrane by acting as an ATP-specific binding subunit releasing ADP after ATP hydrolysis. Thus, plays a role in regulation of VLCFAs and energy metabolism namely, in the degradation and biosynthesis of fatty acids by beta-oxidation, mitochondrial function and microsomal fatty acid elongation.
