THIOREDOXIN PEROXIDASES -
Thioredoxin peroxidases oxidize thoredoxin with the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.
PEROXIREDOXINS -
Peroxiredoxins are a family of thiol-specific antioxidant proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, peroxynitrite and a wide range of organic hydroperoxides (ROOH) to corresponding alcohol (ROH) and water. Catalytic activity is dependent on the oxidation of a conserved cysteine residue at the active site. (Adapted from PMID:12517450).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Thiol-specific peroxidase that catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides to water and alcohols, respectively. Plays a role in cell protection against oxidative stress by detoxifying peroxides and as sensor of hydrogen peroxide-mediated signaling events. Might participate in the signaling cascades of growth factors and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by regulating the intracellular concentrations of H(2)O(2) (By similarity). Reduces an intramolecular disulfide bond in GDPD5 that gates the ability to GDPD5 to drive postmitotic motor neuron differentiation (By similarity).

It can be reactivated by forming a transient disulfide bond with sulfiredoxin SRXN1, which reduces the cysteine sulfinic acid in an ATP- and Mg-dependent manner. Conjugated to URM1, a ubiquitin-like protein.

Jafrac1 transcript is maternally deposited. Maternal transcript quickly degrades, except in germline cells, where it is protected from degradation through embryonic stage 9. At later embryonic stages, Jafrac1 transcript is expressed in crystal cells.
Jafrac1 transcripts are detected throughout deveopment by RT-PCR and are abundant in third instar larval brain, imaginal discs and Malpighian tubules.
