Homozygous mutants have mitotic defects, die during prepupal development, lack all mature imaginal disc structures and have abnormally small optic lobes.
ida is required for viability during metamorphosis and for proliferation of the adult fated imaginal disc cells.
Mutant animals lack all differentiated imaginal disc structures and have smaller than normal optic lobes. The mutation does not block mitosis, but prevents chromosomes from condensing properly and reaching the metaphase plate.
