Gene Snapshot
extra-extra (exex) encodes a homeodomain transcription factor that is expressed in and regulates the differentiation of motor neurons that project axons to ventral body wall muscles. Within the central nervous system, the product of exex negatively interacts with the products of Lim3 and eve to govern neuronal specification and differentiation. The roles of the product of exex include neuronal specification and differentiation. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-07]

NK-LIKE HOMEOBOX TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS -
NK-like (NKL) homeobox transcription factors are sequence-specific DNA binding proteins that regulate transcription. NKL transcription factors are homeobox genes closely related to Hox-like genes, a number of which are found in the NK cluster. Many of the NKL members contain an Engrailed Homology 1 (EH1) motif. (Adapted from FBrf0232555 and PMID:22094586).
Summary (Interactive Fly)

a homeodomain transcription factor - regulates motorneuron cell fate by restricting expression of Even-skipped and Lim2 - dHb9 expressing larval motor neurons persist through metamorphosis to innervate adult-specific muscle targets and function in Drosophila eclosion

      Additional comments
      Other Comments

Lim3 and exex are expressed in near identical patterns though neither is required for the activation of expression of the other. tup and exex also do not regulate each other's expression. exex represses Lim3 cell-non-autonomously in a subset of dorsally projecting motorneurons. exex and eve regulate each other's expression through gro-dependent crossrepression. Cross-repressive interactions between exex and eve delimit exex expression to ventral and lateral motor neurons and eve expression to dorsal motor neurons.

exex is central to motorneuron development. exex regulates neuronal fate by restricting expression of Lim3 and eve.

exex plays a role in the development or differentiation of ventrally projecting motoneurons.

Mis-expression of exex causes a thickening of ventral motor projections (but not dorsal motor projections), defects in longitudinal connectives and collapse of commissures.

Mutant embryos have extra eve-expressing neurons in the developing central nervous system.
