Gene Snapshot
BRCA2, DNA repair associated (Brca2) encodes the ortholog of the human BRCA2 gene, which acts as a tumor suppressor. It is involved in double-strand break repair via homologous recombination. During meiosis in females it is involved in DNA repair and in the activation of a meiotic checkpoint. It co-immunoprecipitates with the checkpoint protein encoded by Rad9. Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Involved in and required for double-strand break repair by meiotic and mitotic homologous recombination. During meiosis, has a dual role in the repair of meiotic double-stranded breaks and the efficient activation of the meiotic recombination checkpoint.

    Other Comments
Loss of Brca2 sensitizes cells to DNA damage.
Brca2 is essential for inter-homolog gene conversion but dispensable for single strand annealing repair.

    Etymology
Named 'Brca2' after the human homolog.
