FlyBase curator comment: 'salto' rather than 'sal' is used as the FlyBase gene symbol to minimise confusion with other genes for which 'sal' has been used as a synonym, particularly salm (referred to as 'sal' in >200 publications).
The gene symbol "SIP2" has been reverted to "CG13164" as it was originally named based on a 2001 conference abstract (FBrf0144616) and hasn't been named/characterized in a peer-reviewed publication since. Reverting to the CG number will also reduce confusion with the "sip2" ("septin interacting protein 2") gene symbol, from which it differed only by case.

The gene is named "salto" (French for "somersault") after the mutant phenotype.
