Gene Snapshot
Sno oncogene (Snoo) encodes a protein that belongs to the highly conserved Sno/Ski family of Smad binding proteins. It specifically binds the product of Med and switches its affinity from the products of Mad to Smox, resulting in antagonism of the product of dpp and facilitation of Activin signaling. Snoo overexpression antagonizes both pathways. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-14]

OTHER DNA BINDING DOMAIN TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS -
The Other DNA binding domain transcription factors group is a collection of DNA-binding transcription factors that do not fit into any of the other major domain-based transcription factor groups.
Pathway (FlyBase)
Negative Regulators of BMP Signaling Pathway -
Negative regulators of Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) signaling down-regulate the pathway, ultimately resulting in the decreased nuclear activity of the Mad/Med transcription factor complex.
Positive Regulators of Activin Signaling Pathway -
Positive regulators of activin signaling up-regulate the pathway, ultimately resulting in the increased nuclear activity of the Smox/Med transcription factor complex.
Summary (Interactive Fly)

mediator of Baboon signaling - antagonizes Dpp signaling - physically interacts with Medea - inhibits growth when overexpressed - belongs to the highly conserved Sno/Ski family of Smad binding proteins - Medea and switches its affinity from Mad to Smox, resulting in antagonism of dpp and facilitation of Activin signaling

    Additional comments

Annotations CG7233 and CG7093 merged as CG34421 in release 5.2 of the genome annotation.

    Other Comments

snoN has limited function in development, inhibiting TGF-β-induced wing vein formation during pupation.

The Snoo locus contains a recent retrotransposon insertion (297{}323) that may be essential for Snoo function; a recovered cDNA sequence suggests that a possible Snoo promoter may reside within the 297{}323 element and animals in which the insertion is deleted show lethality.

    1 allele of l(2)SH1402 recovered in a P-insertion screen.
