The "lemming" locus gives rise to a dicistronic transcript. The two open reading frames (ORFs) are lmgA (upstream ORF) and lmgB (downstream ORF). The lethal, morphological and mitotic phenotypes of the Df(2L)lmg[138] deletion (which affects both open reading frames) are rescued by expression of the lmgA ORF alone and the lmgB ORF does not appear to be efficiently translated in S2 cells.
