eater transcript can be detected in wandering third instar larvae, and in pharate adults, but not at prepupal or pupal stages. eater transcript is expressed in all lobes of the lymph gland, and in all plasmatocyte lineage cells including circulating and sessile plasmatocytes and macrophages, but not crystal cells or lamellocytes. eater transcript is not detected in any nonhematopoietic larval tissues, nor in embryonic macrophages.

Please Note FlyBase no longer curates genomic clone accessions so this list may not be complete
Please Note This section lists cDNAs and ESTs that fall within the genomic extent of the gene model, which may include cDNAs and ESTs of genes within introns, or of overlapping genes. Please see GBrowse for alignment of the cDNAs and ESTs to the gene model.
For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.

Silencing of eater in S2 cells results in a strong decrease in phagocytosis of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in these cells. The defect is in the recognition and binding of the pathogens.
