vari protein expression was detected from embryonic stage 13-17 and is observed in septate junctions in epithelial tissues including the epidermis, trachea, proventriculus, salivary gland and hindgut. In larvae, vari protein is observed in the neurepithelium of the optic lobe and in central brain neuroblasts in third instar larvae. In the adult nervous system, vari localizes to a subset of differentiated neurons surrounding neuropile regions.
