Expression confined to neurons. In 12-14 h embryos
high levels of fasciclin I are detectable in two commissural
axon bundles (fascicles) per segment, a thick one in the posterior commissure and a thin one in the anterior commissure.
In addition high expression is seen in two clusters of neuronal cell bodies per hemisegment as well as in the intersegmental and segmental nerve axons. Finally, fasciclin I is
detected on the surface of all peripheral neurons. Postulated
to be involved in neuron recognition during growth cone guidance. Flies deficient in FasI function are fully viable and
CNS development apparently is normal.

Fas1 was found to be tightly associated with the lipid bilayer by a phosphotidylinositol lipid moiety. The proportion of membrane bound to soluble
Fas1 was assayed during embryogenesis. The amount of membrane-bound, phosphatidylinositol-linked
Fas1 was higher from blastoderm to early gastrulation stages. During germ band extension and retraction, the amount of soluble
Fas1 was 3 times higher than membrane-bound
Fas1 . Later, as
Fas1 expression became restricted to the nervous system and a few other tissues, the phosphatidylinositol linked form was once again the predominant form.

The
Fas1 protein is expressed in parts of the nervous system of 11-14 hr embryos. The protein is expressed on the axons of a subset of cells in the central nervous system, and on sensory axon pathways in the peripheral nervous system . Staining is first observed on a single axon fascicle in each commissure. The axons of peripheral nerve roots, and surfaces of sensory neurons in the PNS contain
Fas1 protein. At 12-13 hours of development, two clusters of neuronal cells stain per hemisegment. The axons of the anterior and posterior fas icles, peripheral sensory axons, and the glia surrounding them, stain for
Fas1 protein. Specific subsets of CNS neurons, such as the aCC and RP1 neurons, express
Fas1 protein. Also strongly staining are the axons and cell bodies of head sensory structures, especially the dorsal and terminal organs of the antenno-maxillary complex.
