spoon-RA transcipts are most abundant in the ovary. THey are already detectable in the nurse cell cytoplasm of the youngest egg chambers and peak at oogenesis stages 9-10. Other isoforms are present at very low levels.

    yu is required for olfactory long-term memory formation.

    spoon is required largely in th germline for the correct patterning of the egg chamber. However, it may also be required in the soma and may play a role in the proper specification of border cell cluster polarity.

    The spoon gene may function as a positive regulator upstream of both grk/Egfr and the dpp pathway.

    Mutants show female sterility. In spoon mutant egg chambers the selective transport of grk RNA from the nurse cells into the oocyte, as well as its proper localization and translation, are disrupted.

    The gene is named "mitochondrial DNA insufficient" based on the mutant phenotype of reduced mitochondrial DNA replication.

    Gene is named "yu" (yu means "foolish" in Chinese) as mutants show defects in memory.
