Hormone receptor 4 (Hr4) encodes a nuclear receptor that acts both upstream and downstream of the steroid hormone ecdysone. In the prothoracic gland the product of Hr4 acts as a repressor of ecdysone production. In other tissues, including the salivary gland and the fat body, Hr4 is transcriptionally induced by ecdysone to transduce the effects of the hormone. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-07]

Nuclear receptors (NR) are C4 zinc finger ligand-dependent DNA-binding transcription factors. Members of the NR superfamily are defined by the presence of a highly conserved DNA-binding domain and a less conserved C-terminal ligand-binding domain. (Adapted from FBrf0184203).

      Hr4 oscillates between the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells in the prothoracic gland. Hr4 is absent from nuclei at developmental times when low titre ecdysone pulses occur.
