SEMAPHORINS -
The Semaphorins are a family of membrane and secreted short-range signaling proteins, originally characterized for their role in axon guidance. The major signal transducing receptors for the semaphorins are the plexins. (Adapted from FBrf0233112, FBrf0137217 and PMID:23253452).

Additional Descriptive Data

Expression pattern inferred from unspecified enhancer trap line.

Sema5c transcripts are observed in nurse cells and in the oocyte at stage S10 of oogenesis. In early embryos, transcripts are uniformly distributed. At the blastoderm stage, a pattern of 6 circumferential stripes becomes apparent. The three anterior stripes are stronger than the posterior stripes. During germ band extension, a pattern of 12 weaker stripes is observed and expression is seen in the area of the amnioserosa. At stage 10, expression is most apparent in the mesoderm. At later stages, strong expression is observed at the muscle attachment sites, in the visceral mesoderm of the anterior part of the midgut, and in the dorsal vessel.

        Additional comments

"Sema-3a" was originally reported in an EDRC abstract (FBrf0109280 and FBrf0125077). A subsequent paper by the same authors (FBrf0137217) indicates that this is the same gene as "Sema-5c" (CG5661).

        Other Comments

Sema-5c is required for normal behavioural responses to the repellent odorant benzaldehyde.

Sema-5c mutants show a reduced behavioural response to the repellent odorant benzaldehyde and have subtle neuroanatomical changes in the brain, with a reduction in size of the ellipsoid body.

ChEST reveals this is a target of Mef2.
