hide Notes
An Afrotropical species found, so far, only in equatorial West Africa, where its major breeding site is the fallen fruit of the trees of the genus Pandanus (Lachaise and Tsacas, 1974; Rio et al., 1983). Strains of Drosophila erecta are polymorphic for the black pigmentation of the posterior abdominal tergites. This is due to a pair of sex-linked alleles, that for black pigmentation being dominant over that for nonpigmented (Payant, 1986; Payant, 1988; M. Ashburner, unpubl.).
