The BS element is a LINE-like transposable element. It has no terminal repeats, an A-rich sequence at the 3' end of the coding strand
and two long open reading frames. The first open reading frame contains motifs characteristic of the gag gene of retroviruses
and the second contains motifs characteristic of reverse transcriptase.
First described as a sequence inserted within the gypsy element associated with the acHw-1 mutation. It was reported to have inverted terminal repeats of 2.5 kb, but according to the annotation of EMBL AC X77571
this is not so. The sequence of the internal domain is well conserved in the genome (Livingstone and Finnegan). Restriction
