In second instar wing discs, wg expression, as assayed by Ecol\lacZwg-en11 expression, accumulates in the disc epithelium proper in a wedge of ventro-anterior cells. At early to mid third instar, Ecol\lacZwg-en11 begins to exhibit expression along the dorsal/ventral compartment boundary of the wing disc.

Reporter expression is detected is detected in the circular muscles that envelope gut epithelia.

Expression in the leg and antennal discs is observed in a wedge in the anterior/ventral quadrant, and in the lateral regions of the eye disc.

Expression in the male and female genital discs is complementary to that of dpp.

In third instar larval abdominal segments, expressed cells of the anterior compartment immmediately anterior to the posterior compartment, and in histoblasts within the anterior compartment. In adult abdominal segments, expressed in the anterior compartment, with highest levels at posterior edge.

Strong embryonic expression in epidermal stripes, midgut in parasegment 8 and in proventriculus; weak expression in ventral nerve cord.

Ecol\lacZ reporter gene expression isseen in all of the cells of the Malpighian tubules as they evert from theproctodeum. Staining becomes faint on the anterior side of the tubules andin the tip cells during germ band shortening suggesting that expressionbecomes limited to the cells on the posterior side of the tubules asdevelopment proceeds.
