The expression pattern of reporters for ara, caup and mirr were compared. All are expressed in similar patterns to the endogenous gene and all are expressed for the most part in the same region of the third instar larval wing disc. However, they do show specific expression domains particularly in the prospective notum. The caup domain is larger and spreads more medially than ara. The mirr expression domain overlaps only partly with the ara and caup domains. However, they do not exactly coincide within these regions: notably, the mirr domain is reduced in the most lateral region of the prospective notum. The caup expression domain is more extended medially than the mirr domain, which in turn is expressed more broadly than ara.

After germband retraction, Ecol\lacZara-rF209is expressed adjacent and ventral to the ectodermal expression domain of pnr. In adults, expression is observed in the lateral region of the abdominal segment, adjacent to the region of pnr expression.

Expression in presumptive heminotum observed in second instar wing disc. In third instar wing disc, expression strongest in presumptive lateral heminotum.

Insertion produces phenotypic effects in two adjacent genes, ara and caup. Insertion site is within the second intron of ara, approximately 23kb from the caup transcription start site.
